# Embracing the Unexpected: Cultivating Openness in Life

Chapter 1: A Refreshing Perspective
During the summer months, I often gravitate towards a classic non-alcoholic mojito; it’s a delightful blend of flavors that I truly enjoy and serves as a refreshing respite even on the hottest days. However, one day, the waiter approached me with a cheerful grin, announcing, "Your strawberry mojito is a surprise from the establishment!" In that moment, I felt like the dogs in P.K. Anokhin's experiment who, instead of their usual dry powder, received an unexpected piece of meat—a more appealing treat but one that was completely unforeseen. Like those dogs, I found myself less than thrilled by this “surprise,” and even the phrase "from the establishment" did little to improve my mood.
What went awry? The situation unfolded as anticipated, yet my enjoyment of the new experience was hindered by my established dynamic stereotype: I habitually order my favorite classic mojito in summer.
However, this anecdote isn't about merely "surviving" in an unpredictable world while clinging to familiar tastes or opinions. Rather, it highlights that our brains often resist surprises, even those that could be delightful. Our mental framework is largely built on dynamic stereotypes—stable systems of connections formed in the brain from repetitive activities performed in the same manner and sequence. These stereotypes manifest through emotional responses, allowing our brains to conserve resources by performing certain actions out of habit. While this has its advantages, it also comes with limitations. Recognizing this fact can help us manage the initial discomfort that often accompanies new experiences.
Take a moment to observe your surroundings: the world is increasingly diverse, and our quality of life is influenced by our willingness to embrace uncertainty. The more open and adaptable we can be, the more we can broaden our established views and beliefs. Rather than turning our lives into a battle to make the world conform to our preferences, we can learn to adapt and create a fulfilling life in the present.
Each of us holds certain "principles" that define who we are and shape our behaviors, including our decision-making processes. You might assert, "These are my values, and I live by them." While adhering to our values is crucial, a rigid system can often prevent us from considering new perspectives or solutions, leading to increased tension and chronic stress.
To navigate stress effectively, I encourage practicing openness. This approach can reduce susceptibility to worries and frustrations. When things don't unfold as anticipated, cultivating a calm perception of life's variability becomes easier. By fostering openness and flexibility, we not only accept the unexpected more readily but also avoid fixating on aspects beyond our control, such as others' feelings or opinions. Embracing a more open worldview doesn’t require abandoning your values or fundamentally changing who you are; instead, it enriches your understanding of reality, offering diverse perspectives and experiences.
Section 1.1: Assessing Your Openness
To gauge your level of open-mindedness, reflect on the following questions:
- In which areas of your life do you hold the most rigid views?
- Can you recall instances where your judgments were overly harsh?
- What influenced these judgments (personal experiences, upbringing, literature, etc.)?
- Do you believe these judgments are entirely fair and accurate?
When making decisions, prioritize factual information. The more facts you gather, the more choices and explanations you will have at your disposal.
Engage in focused listening during conversations—approximately 70% of communication is listening, while only 30% is speaking. This attentive approach can lead to greater understanding and clarity.
