Navigating Autism: A Journey of Growth and Understanding

Chapter 1: A Day in Our Lives
Restful nights are rare, but thankfully Owen managed to sleep, and I caught some much-needed rest too. The joy of uninterrupted sleep is something I cherish.
The repetitive behaviors and phrases can be overwhelming, often feeling insurmountable. Distinguishing between strategies to redirect these behaviors and actually stopping them seems to be an ongoing battle. When your child is incredibly intelligent and never forgets a thing, it becomes increasingly challenging to find ways to divert his sharp mind. Owen’s brain craves continuous reassurance, and we are all delving into the reward systems to understand how he processes them. In the moment, his focus drifts far ahead, always ensuring everything unfolds as it should.
Over the years, I've sought ways to divert his attention from seemingly trivial things—a woman with a dog at a street corner or the day-long power outage caused by an accident. The timeline of these events feels distant to me, but Owen remains fixated on them, often resulting in meltdowns. Now, with the storms of 2024 upon us, my heart aches for the distress these will inevitably bring to my sweet boy. I tear up thinking about how often he worries about the upcoming days, fearing disruptions to his school or therapy schedule. The thought of summer break and his transition to middle school is daunting.
Today, he was excited about church but was equally anxious about the rest of his week. As we drove there, he inquired about his friends. One is out of town, and another he hopes will be allowed to join him at church. My sweet Owen truly has a heart of gold.
While he was well-behaved on the way to church, his mood shifted on our return. He began listing things he shouldn’t do, though he managed to avoid them. When he asked if he could take his tablet to therapy, I told him it was permissible if he behaved, which he was determined to do. However, he couldn't resist the urge to laugh and start engaging in the behaviors we were trying to avoid. When I told him he couldn't take his tablet, he began to express his frustration loudly. The emotional toll of this process weighs heavily on me.
He has also started asking me to put my hair up in a ponytail, something I never thought I’d be able to do around him again. I believe this request stems from a cartoon character he enjoys who sports a ponytail. In his younger years, he would have meltdowns just from me moving my hair away from my face. This is a testament to the progress he has made—truly remarkable growth.
The evening felt like a rollercoaster; despite his calm demeanor, he was charged and prepared for Monday. There were moments of mischief where it seemed he was testing my limits, requiring me to keep him grounded. Overall, it was a good day. I am grateful for his development and pray for my own as we navigate this journey together. May the world inspire you, and remember that every effort counts. Sending smiles and donut daze to all!
