Finding Spirituality: Transforming Amends Beyond Apologies

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Amends Process

Merely saying "I'm sorry" is often insufficient in the journey of recovery.

Step 8 instructs us to "create a list of all individuals we have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all." The thought of this list can feel overwhelming, making one wonder, "How can I possibly rectify all these wrongs?" However, it's crucial to approach this task without discouragement. We previously discussed how this program is straightforward, even for those of us with complicated backgrounds.

A turning point for me came during a discussion at an 8th Step meeting, where a 16-year-old boy shared his insights. His advice was simple: if something bothers you, take action; if it doesn’t, let it go. This perspective helped me drastically reduce the length of my list, focusing primarily on family, close friends, and a handful of bosses—those who had endured my repeated "I'm sorrys."

When I reached this step, I practiced a condensed version of the 3rd Step, merely uttering, "God help me," before tackling my list. I realized that my Higher Power was prepared to assist me, as long as I was open to it. This revelation made the daunting task seem manageable. My complicated thoughts were replaced by a clearer, Higher Power-assisted mindset, and my list became significantly shorter.

I found I had largely forgotten the people I had wronged in drunken moments, as we were all caught up in our foolishness. However, certain memories of my meaner actions resurfaced, prompting me to add these instances to my list. Importantly, at this stage, we are simply compiling the list. By now, I had developed a genuine sense of right and wrong. It became clear to me that any action requiring harm—either physical or emotional—was inherently wrong.

As I progressed, I began to feel good about myself when I acted rightly, while any wrongdoings stirred feelings of unease. The phrase "If it feels good, do it" evolved into something far more profound. I began to appreciate the positive steps I was taking to rectify my past misdeeds, understanding that simply uttering "I'm sorry" wasn’t sufficient.

Always remember to approach this step just as we have with previous ones—begin with "God help me," and then take action! It may not be easy at first, but the process is straightforward. The more diligently I engage with my program—both in meetings and in daily life—the more manageable it becomes.

If we commit to working our program as thoroughly as possible every day, our lives will undoubtedly improve. Just express "God help me," and then allow Him to guide you. The results will follow. Always keep in mind, as long as you abstain from alcohol or drugs today, you have the power to make choices in every situation. When faced with uncertainty, remember to say, "God help me," and then act! The decision is in your hands. What will you choose? Thank you, God!
