Don't Start a Newsletter Without Answering These 5 Questions

Understanding Your Newsletter Strategy
Recently, one of my readers reached out with enthusiasm about launching a newsletter. While this is promising—email lists provide security against the unpredictability of social media algorithms—it's crucial to evaluate if this step aligns with your writing goals.
Upon asking a few key questions, it became evident that my reader might be heading in the wrong direction. Many new writers often misinterpret the loudest advice as the most valid. The popularity of starting a newsletter is undeniable, yet it can lead to pitfalls if not approached strategically.
Here’s why a newsletter may not be the best fit for you.
Misalignment with Your Goals
Writing offers various pathways, and while newsletters can be beneficial for some, they may not suit everyone. The typical approach is to capture attention, demonstrate value on social media, entice people to join your email list via a lead magnet, build trust through consistent value, and then pitch your offerings.
However, if your aim is to freelance, ghostwrite, or refine your writing skills for your current role, dedicating time to a newsletter could be counterproductive. Instead, focus on developing a portfolio and honing your sales skills. Engage with your target audience on social media first, then present your services.
Undefined Niche
I launched a Substack newsletter in 2022 but discontinued it after six months due to difficulties in attracting subscribers. My initial topic was too broad, simply revolving around 'improving life.' Once I narrowed my niche to assisting new writers, I realized it wasn't relevant to my email list.
Before starting a newsletter, ensure you have a clear focus. Experiment on social media to find the intersection of your interests and audience demand. Write extensively to discover what resonates.
Insufficient Following
If you're struggling to gather followers on social platforms, it's unlikely that anyone will subscribe to your newsletter. People are selective about sharing their email addresses.
Avoid the trap of spreading your content too thinly. Focus on mastering one platform first. You don’t need vast numbers; a small, engaged audience is far more valuable than empty metrics. If your growth is stagnant, it may indicate that your content lacks interest or utility.
Unpolished Writing Skills
Once you have a following, gaining subscribers becomes easier, but retaining them is a different challenge. Attracting subscribers often involves offering a lead magnet, like a free course or downloadable resource. While people may be drawn in by freebies, they will unsubscribe if you fail to provide value.
This requires proficient and compelling writing. In today's world, inboxes are flooded, and mediocre content won't cut it. Therefore, use social media to refine your writing abilities. Consider taking courses, hiring a coach, or reading books and blogs for guidance. The focus should be on practice, not merely consuming advice.
Lack of Audience Understanding
Engaging with your readers is essential. Building an email list is simple if you solve their problems effectively, which can lead to profitable opportunities. However, understanding your audience's pain points and aspirations is vital.
Use social media to gauge what resonates with your audience. Don’t make assumptions; your newsletter should deliver value rather than serve as an experimental platform. The needs of your audience will dictate your content and the challenges you address.
