Will We Finally Take COVID-19 Seriously? A Call for Unity

The Impact of Leadership on the Pandemic
Recently, we found out that former President Trump and First Lady Melania tested positive for COVID-19. This raises the question: how will this affect our nation’s approach to the ongoing pandemic?
It is well-documented that Trump has often distorted the truth about the virus, downplaying its severity and disregarding essential information from the start. Furthermore, he has used the pandemic as a political tool, inciting division among his supporters against Democratic candidates and their policies. This includes belittling crucial health measures like wearing masks and maintaining social distance—both of which have been proven to protect public health.
While I wish Mr. Trump no harm, I sincerely hope this situation prompts him to reconsider his stance on the virus. If he were wise, he would have done so by now.
Despite the risks, fervent Trump supporters continue to gather without masks, dismissing the dangers and labeling the virus as a Democratic conspiracy. Ironically, if these individuals fall ill, they lose their ability to support him at the polls.
I strive to approach this with empathy. However, when individuals blatantly disregard health guidelines—whether it’s spring breakers in Florida, evangelical leaders attributing the virus to political foes, or die-hard Trump supporters filling stadiums as seen during a recent rally—it’s hard not to think, “I told you so.”
Some friends argue that if Trump changes his approach now, it might earn him more votes in the upcoming election. With thousands perishing daily and the U.S. leading in COVID-19 fatalities, that’s a risk I’m willing to take.
Nonetheless, I remain skeptical, especially after emphasizing the importance of deep breathing in multiple articles. Will we need sheer force or genuine leadership to navigate this crisis?
Power vs. Force: Understanding the Dynamics
I’ve been revisiting Power vs. Force by David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. Hawkins explored human consciousness, categorizing its levels through applied kinesiology. One of his significant insights is the differentiation between lower levels of consciousness—associated with force—and higher levels, which are characterized by true power.
True power is derived from meaning, intention, and principles. It uplifts, unites, and dignifies. Power nurtures life, while force divides and thrives on conflict, creating real or imagined adversaries.
Force operates at lower levels of consciousness, while power resides at higher levels. This distinction explains how Gandhi’s peaceful movement ultimately triumphed over the British Empire, securing India’s independence.
We cannot overcome this virus through brute force or its implications. Accusations, mockery, and dismissing scientific evidence will not lead us to solutions. It’s disheartening that many countries have successfully managed the virus and reopened safely, many of which are led by women. What is required is authentic leadership.
Effective leadership involves a unified, science-based, and compassionate approach. It should model the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and frame patriotism as collaboration to save lives and confront a common enemy.
Clear policies—mandating masks and social distancing—must be consistently implemented. These rules should transcend political affiliations and be uniformly applied across the nation.
The U.S. Declaration of Independence emphasizes our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, the current administration seems to contradict this principle.
With the ongoing neglect of the virus and the encouragement of extremist groups to intimidate peaceful protests, one must question the direction we are headed. Do we truly want four more years filled with death and despair?
At the same time, the Democratic Party has a crucial chance to clarify its message. It’s essential to seize this moment, not with arrogance or malice, but with a call to action—a genuine, scientific national plan that invites all citizens to participate in saving lives.
Just as rationing, war bonds, and victory gardens were collective efforts during World War II, wearing masks and practicing social distancing can be our contribution to the fight against COVID-19. This is a call to action for ourselves, our families, our communities, and our nation—together, regardless of political differences.
Is that too much to ask?
