The Surprising Truth About Life Advice You Might Ignore

Written on

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Modern Ambition

In today’s fast-paced world, a young woman found herself contemplating abandoning her university studies. She felt disconnected from her course, lacked motivation, and was increasingly burdened by the accumulating debt. While her feelings were understandable—no one wishes to commit to years of financial strain for something they’re not passionate about—there was a deeper reason for her desire to quit, which she only revealed later in our initial therapy session.

Her hidden truth was the fear of mediocrity; she didn’t believe her studies would lead her to the life she envisioned. Highly intelligent and successful in school, she had always excelled in academics, music, and drama, earning respect from her teachers and popularity among her peers. Yet, once in university, she felt like a small fish in an ocean of equally capable, if not more talented, individuals. “I realized that even with relentless effort, I would merely be another face in the crowd. I wouldn’t stand out,” she expressed.

The thought of leading an ordinary life left her feeling deflated. She aspired to study something she could excel in, something that ignited her passion and brought her recognition—a life of significance. After a year of coursework, her expectations remained unfulfilled, prompting her to consider a fresh start.

As a psychologist, I was aware of the advice she might not want to hear, yet it could ultimately liberate her.

Finding satisfaction in the ordinary aspects of life.

Section 1.1: Lowering the Bar

“Lower the bar,” I suggested.

This idea might trigger a gasp! Society encourages us to dream big, to pursue our passions fiercely, and to believe we can achieve anything. However, that notion can often lead to mental distress. Advising someone to lower their ambitions can feel like a dismissal of their dreams; it implies settling for less than one’s potential.

But from my experience, too many people strive relentlessly to reach an unrealistic standard. Even when they succeed, they quickly raise that bar again, leaving them in a constant state of dissatisfaction. I have witnessed individuals, even in their 40s and 50s, feeling disillusioned by their inability to discover their passion, despite their best efforts.

It's disheartening. While it’s admirable to chase big dreams, true happiness doesn’t stem from accolades or extreme passion. Instead, it resides in the everyday moments—conversations, connections, and the small joys we find along the way. Satisfaction comes from facing challenges head-on and learning to manage them, as well as supporting others in their struggles.

Section 1.2: Understanding "Lowering the Bar"

Lowering the bar doesn’t equate to failure in life.

It doesn’t mean you will accept subpar relationships or careers (unless you choose to). It doesn’t label you as someone without ambition, stuck in a rut. Instead, it represents a wise approach to avoid the trap of perfectionism—where you berate yourself for not achieving an unattainable ideal.

Lowering the bar allows for dreaming, but it also encourages realistic aspirations aligned with your unique talents, skills, and work ethic. It’s important to celebrate milestones along the journey, rather than postponing joy until you reach a distant goal. A fulfilling life is not measured by hitting high benchmarks, but rather in the quality of the life you create below those bars, the connections you make, and the experiences you enjoy.

I appreciate this quote from Dan Pearce, the author of the Single Dad Laughing blog, which reminds us that joy can be found in the simplest things: “Some people are solving major world problems, and I’m over here all excited because I found a missing sock inside a pair of my underwear.”

Do you recognize that feeling? When you discover something delightful, even trivial, don’t hesitate to celebrate it.
