Rediscovering Life Lessons from My Younger Self

Chapter 1: Early Lessons in Life
In the late 80s, my father's trucking business flourished, and I have vivid memories of him purchasing International tractor trucks in the U.S. to ship to Manila. This success allowed us a lifestyle filled with material possessions, and I grew up indulged, often seeking validation through my belongings. As a teenager, I flaunted brand-name items, believing they were essential for acceptance.
However, after fifteen years of operation, my father declared bankruptcy, and I faced a harsh truth: I could no longer maintain that affluent lifestyle. This experience forced me to reassess my self-worth based on material wealth.
To truly gauge your self-worth, try shedding all your possessions and see how others perceive you.
After graduating college, finding a job proved challenging. Eventually, I managed to secure a position, but after three months, I chose to resign. Admitting my struggles felt like a defeat, and I grappled with feelings of inadequacy as I faced criticism regarding my performance and relationships with colleagues.
Reflecting on my time after resignation, I battled feelings of worthlessness when stripped of money and possessions. I observed others who, despite their hardships, exuded confidence and hope. Their resilience inspired me, and hitting rock bottom reignited my ambitions. I realized I could rebuild my life if I was willing to put in the effort.
When someone approaches you for a serious conversation, it often signifies a need for change.
I remember in 2003, my father sat down with me to discuss the struggles of our family business. It was an unusual moment of vulnerability for him, highlighting his concern for my future. He understood my tendency to become discouraged and wanted to ensure I was prepared for what lay ahead.
Looking back at my college experience, I remember it as one of excitement rather than diligence. While my peers focused on academics, I was caught up in social events, hardly dedicating time to study.
If others gossip about you, it might stem from envy or a reflection of your own shortcomings.
Eventually, my carefree attitude caught up with me in my marketing job. I discovered that my colleagues doubted my capabilities, which left me feeling isolated and inadequate. Night after night, I found myself in tears, longing to regain my footing.
After my heartfelt conversation with Dad, I realized it was crucial not to miss the next opportunity to grow. I needed to reevaluate my obstacles and acknowledge that change required letting go of past habits.
You reap what you sow.
As a preacher once said, “We reap what we sow, more than we sow, and later than we sow.” Our present actions undeniably shape our future. Take a moment to assess your current situation; it is often a reflection of past choices. It’s essential to be judicious in your decision-making.
Identify areas in your life that require improvement. Consider what you can change today to steer your life back on track. What are the challenges you find difficult to release?
