# Navigating the Stress of Social Media Engagement

Written on

Chapter 1: The Burden of Social Media Notifications

Feeling overwhelmed by the constant barrage of notifications from social media platforms can be exhausting.

Every time I hear that ping, it’s a reminder of the pressure to stay connected, which often feels like a weight on my shoulders.

Social media can be both a time and mental drain. Personally, I find Instagram frustrating; it hasn’t brought me any meaningful connections or benefits. While I once enjoyed Quora, my focus shifted to Medium during the pandemic, where I found joy in expressing myself through long-form writing.

Now, I’m gradually embracing LinkedIn, appreciating the opportunity to share my unfiltered thoughts. It’s gratifying to see that others resonate with my raw content on LinkedIn. On the other hand, Twitter has always felt like an uphill battle for me. Despite this, I'm experimenting with writing there as well, hoping to find my voice.

Recently, I’ve discovered a passion for journaling. Sharing my daily experiences—what I learned, who I interacted with—has been fulfilling, especially on Medium and LinkedIn. However, I sometimes hesitate to write on LinkedIn due to its professional atmosphere. Yet, the trend towards casual communication in the workplace encourages me to be more open about my experiences. Medium, free from judgment, allows me to express my thoughts without any constraints. After all, I need a space to articulate my ideas, right?

Section 1.1: The Challenge of Overthinking on LinkedIn

My journey on LinkedIn has had its ups and downs. Whenever I receive kind comments on my posts, it brings me immense joy and alleviates my stress. However, the pressure to post consistently can be daunting. I often wonder what I can share daily—not just on LinkedIn, but across all platforms. Perhaps I only want to share things I find significant, insights that could genuinely benefit my audience.

This could explain why I don’t post daily on LinkedIn. I don’t feel the need to document every aspect of my life. I’m not an influencer; I’m someone who cherishes the little moments and struggles with consistency in my writing, despite my love for it. There are many facets of my personality that I choose not to showcase, as they may not offer value to my readers. I’ve navigated adult challenges without definitive solutions, merely adapting along the way.

On LinkedIn, I share my struggles, acknowledging that people often care more about the narrative than the content itself. Unless it involves creative brand promotion, individual stories may not receive the attention they deserve. Everyone tells relatable stories, yet they resonate differently based on the delivery.

Connecting with talented creators can be overwhelming; their frequent posts create a fear of missing out. I often find myself questioning why I’m avoiding content and worrying about my own contributions.

Section 1.2: Strategies for Managing Social Media Stress

The good news is, there are numerous strategies to alleviate social media-related stress, even in a creative field.

Focusing on just one or two platforms can allow you to dedicate your time effectively. By choosing to write on selected platforms, you can even monetize your work, helping reduce stress about the vastness of the internet.

Creating high-quality content on your preferred platforms can lead to building a loyal community. You might share your experiences on one platform while discussing the insights gained from that platform on another.

If you establish a sustainable system for yourself and adhere to it for at least a year, you can reap the rewards of your efforts. I’m currently on this journey and will share my progress. My biggest hurdle is consistency, but I’m exploring ways to overcome it through a more curated approach.
