Navigating Life with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Personal Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: Setting the Scene

In the year 2021, life seemed relatively normal—aside from a certain relentless virus, of course. I found joy in my morning coffee and cherished moments with friends and family, free from the anxiety of searching for a bathroom or ruining my favorite pajamas. As an introvert, I had settled into a cozy winter routine, filled with video games and drive-through meals, which provided a sense of stability during the challenging Ontario lockdowns.

With the arrival of spring, I was eager to return to skateboarding, my primary source of exercise. Unfortunately, that season took an unexpected turn as I unwittingly experienced my first flare-up—a distressing episode characterized by urgent, bloody bowel movements.

The video titled "SUFFERING? How I Reversed My Crohn's, Colitis, & IBD - Dane Johnson" offers insight into managing inflammatory bowel disease and personal anecdotes that resonate with many facing similar challenges.

What Is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

For those unfamiliar, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) primarily manifests in two forms: Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). While UC affects only the large intestine and rectum, CD can impact the entire gastrointestinal tract, making it more challenging yet manageable with professional guidance.

In both cases, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, causing inflammation, bleeding, and various distressing symptoms, such as intense abdominal pain and frequent, sometimes false, urges to use the restroom. Although this topic can be dense and technical, I won't delve into the intricate details here.

On With The Challenges

Like many, I initially dismissed my symptoms, assuming they were minor issues like hemorrhoids. However, after persistent nudging from my mother, I sought medical advice. Expecting confirmation of my suspicions, I was instead referred for a colonoscopy after the doctor expressed concern over my frequent bathroom visits.

Following a night of prepping with laxatives and an unappetizing clear liquid diet, I arrived at the hospital for the procedure, where random biopsies were taken. The findings revealed no hemorrhoids but diagnosed me with proctitis, later confirmed as Ulcerative Colitis. The doctors admitted the cause and definitive treatment were still unclear, and I was prescribed a nightly suppository.

Surprisingly, my symptoms subsided that week, allowing me to momentarily forget about my diagnosis as I resumed a semblance of normal life.

Chapter 2: The Impact of a Severe Flare

However, just 17 weeks later, I faced a much more severe flare. During this period, I found myself visiting the restroom over 20 times a day for several months, leading to significant weight loss and feelings of despair. I felt confined, unable to venture far from a bathroom, which strained my relationships and left me feeling stagnant.

Despite my challenges, I realized I was unhappy with my life and had the power to change it. With the help of a supportive friend in British Columbia, I found a counselor to express my frustrations. I also turned to productivity and self-help gurus on YouTube, which inspired me to take charge of my mental well-being.

Through this journey of self-discovery, I was fortunate to find a compassionate doctor who implemented effective treatment strategies, including intravenous antibiotics and corticosteroids. Gradually, my symptoms improved, and I regained the ability to engage with the world around me.

Learning to Live Again

Today, I am almost fully healed from that severe flare. More importantly, I have embraced a proactive attitude towards my life, focusing on creating the future I desire and finding happiness in my current circumstances.

This experience, though challenging, has motivated me to take control of my life. The journey ahead may still be long and uncertain, but I am optimistic about what lies ahead.
