What You Can Contribute to This Year for Positive Change

Chapter 1: The Power of Personal Contribution
The primary distinction between this year and the previous one lies in you.

“What the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year.” — Vernon McLellan
If you find yourself waiting for a “good year,” you might be waiting indefinitely. Throughout history, every year has had its challenges. Life has never been straightforward, and it likely never will be. Many claim recent years have been difficult, yet history reveals far worse times.
The quality of this year largely hinges on what you choose to offer it, rather than what it delivers to you.
Numerous individuals fail to grasp this concept; they constantly procrastinate, justifying their inaction by blaming a “Bad Year.” These people often surrender, hoping for a miracle that may never arrive, wasting precious time and settling for less than they deserve.
We all encounter tough years, much like we face bad days. The key difference lies in our response to those challenges.
On the other hand, there are those who refuse to make excuses. They create something remarkable from their circumstances, despite the hardships and complaints of the masses.
Which group do you wish to belong to? The choice is yours. Will you set yourself up for disappointment, or will you strive for your best year yet, regardless of obstacles?
If you aspire for more, you must bring more to the table.
1. Bring More Courage
“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” — Anais Nin
Courage can transform anyone into a hero. Why not let it transform you?
This admirable trait empowers individuals to stand firm during challenging times. It involves rejecting what diminishes you, accepting challenges that may be painful yet ultimately fortify you, and taking risks that others advise against. It means daring to dream, to attempt, and to persevere even after failure.
This year calls for more courageous individuals. Dare to be one of them.
2. Bring Deeper Understanding
“The highest activity a human being can attain is learning for understanding, because to understand is to be free.” — Baruch Spinoza
Many issues arise from ignorance, including some of my own. Reflect on how many of your struggles stemmed from a lack of insight.
This year, strive to expand your understanding. Read more books, ask more questions, and have the bravery to appear foolish by admitting what you don’t know.
By enhancing your understanding of the world, others, and yourself, you will experience a remarkable transformation. However, without this endeavor, progress will be elusive.
How can you cultivate deeper understanding? Start here.
3. Bring Swift and Persistent Action
“Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.” — Conrad Hilton
Many will find themselves stagnant this year simply because they failed to take action to alter their circumstances.
Do you want this year to be different? Then take action now—not next month or next year. Your time is limited. You are as youthful as you will ever be. What are you waiting for? If you continue to linger on the sidelines for yet another year, you risk waiting for the rest of your life.
Take action. Stumble. Rise again. Keep trying—no matter how long it takes.
What’s one small step you can take right now? Do it, regardless of its size. Be more decisive this year.
4. Bring a Healthy Amount of Patience
“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” — Aristotle
Achieving greatness demands immense patience.
If you are genuinely pursuing a grand and magnificent dream, you will need the patience to endure its challenges.
If this year is the year you aim to conquer that mountain, prepare yourself with patience; otherwise, you may succumb to the same fate as many others—giving up, or worse, falling for enticing shortcuts that lead to significant mistakes.
Quick-fix schemes are popular for a reason. Don't be deceived by them.
Instead, combine patience with consistent action. How? Begin by practicing mindfulness regarding what triggers your impatience, and mastering the space between stimulus and response.
5. Bring More Focus Than Ever Before
“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” — Zig Ziglar
Approach this year with a clear understanding of what you desire from it.
Do not navigate through life merely to pay bills, sleep, or “get through” each day. You need something far more meaningful. What are you willing to live—and die—for?
I urge you to find an answer today.
To sharpen your focus this year, knowing your desires is essential. Focus requires a target. What will yours be? Consider engaging with programs like Self-Authoring to clarify your life’s vision.
6. Bring More Love
“Where there is love there is life.” — Mahatma Gandhi
Infusing your life with love allows it to flourish beyond your current expectations. The same is true for your surroundings.
This isn’t the superficial notion of ‘self-love’ that excuses poor behavior. I refer to the kind of love that encourages you to believe in yourself and pursue the positive changes you’ve always desired, whether that means increasing your income, improving your health, or challenging yourself with a worthy goal.
True self-love serves as a good mentor, recognizing your potential.
Bring more of this love into your life—not just for yourself, but for everyone around you.
This Year Is What You Make of It
“Be the one who nurtures and builds. Be the one who has an understanding and a forgiving heart, one who looks for the best in people. Leave people better than you found them.” — Marvin J. Ashton
Leave this year in a better state than you found it.
Everything hinges on you. I understand that misfortunes occur. When you experience significant losses, it can feel as though there’s no escape. I’ve faced those moments. However, it is not our legacy to surrender. It certainly isn’t our legacy to allow circumstances to reduce us to nothing. Even in adversity, we bear the responsibility to keep living and to strive for improvement.
So, contribute more to this year than you did the last, because, for better or worse, what you receive is a reflection of what you give.
