Innovative Approaches to Elevate the US Educational System

Written on

The Importance of Flexibility in Education

The recent pandemic has highlighted a critical truth: education is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Allowing students to take charge of their education enables them to devote their time and energy to their personal interests and passions beyond the classroom.

In my latest interview series focusing on enhancements in the US educational system, I had the opportunity to speak with Arra Yerganian.

Arra G. Yerganian is a distinguished executive and brand architect known for his impactful leadership in top-tier companies. He currently serves as the President of Laurel Springs School, the pioneering online school in the United States. Based in San Jose, California, Yerganian has earned accolades for his innovative contributions to both the healthcare and higher education sectors, holding executive positions at organizations like Tivity Health, Sutter Health, One Medical, and the University of Phoenix. He is also a member of the Dean's Advisory Board at Boston University's School of Public Health.

What inspired you to pursue this career path?

My passion for education has been a lifelong commitment. My father spent over 50 years as a collegiate educator, influencing countless students. His belief in the power of education allowed me to attend Boston Latin School, one of the nation's finest public schools. Throughout my formative years, I learned the importance of understanding how to learn, which laid a strong foundation for my future. One memorable quote I recall from my father's car was a bumper sticker that said, "If you think education is expensive, consider ignorance."

Over the years, my career has revolved around education. As the Chief Marketing Officer at the University of Phoenix, I focused on linking education with career opportunities for our large student base. This work was fulfilling as it allowed me to help students graduate with valuable skills and secure rewarding jobs. Subsequently, I was involved with Rocketship Schools, a highly regarded charter school network, and I continue to serve on the Dean's Advisory Board at Boston University. Today, I am honored to lead Laurel Springs School, which inspires me daily with its mission.

Can you share a memorable experience from your career?

My work with students presents daily opportunities for powerful, transformative moments in education. However, the most fulfilling aspect of my career is mentoring others. Following in my father's footsteps, I take pride in guiding those I hire, nurture, and watch achieve great success.

What lesson have you learned through mentoring?

Arra: Mentoring involves a personal commitment to invest time in understanding someone’s background and aspirations. This initial investment fosters immense success in the long run.

At Laurel Springs School, we are constantly seeking innovative ways to enhance our educational approach, aiming to provide students with an immersive remote learning experience. How does your approach benefit students?

Our educational philosophy empowers students to learn at their own pace, ensuring they master subjects before advancing. This flexibility enhances their academic experience, making it more fulfilling.

Why do you consider yourself an authority in education?

Having experienced education from multiple perspectives—as a student, parent, observer, and leader in an online school—I have gathered valuable insights to design an exceptional experience for both parents and students.

How would you assess the US education system's performance?

The US education system has successfully adapted to fulfill various societal roles, evolving to expose children to essential coursework. However, the onset of the pandemic tested the system’s resilience, particularly when shifting to remote learning. Many districts faced challenges in establishing effective online infrastructure. While some educators are pleased to return to in-person learning, it is crucial for the system to have contingency plans for potential future disruptions or for students who thrive in remote environments.

What are five strengths of the US education system?

  1. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum: Many states are adopting SEL programs to enhance students' academic performance and mental well-being.
  2. Access to Technology: Technology facilitates connections between students and helps tailor education to individual learning styles.
  3. STEM-focused Learning: Effective STEM programs provide students with hands-on experiences that ignite their interests and passions.
  4. Flexibility and Customizable Education: The pandemic emphasized the need for personalized learning experiences that allow students to explore their interests.
  5. Expanded Educational Opportunities: With the rise of online education, parents can now choose options that better align with their lifestyles and students have access to a broader range of subjects.

What five areas need improvement in the US education system?

  1. Internet Access: The transition to online learning during the pandemic highlighted the critical need for reliable internet access.
  2. Digital Curriculum Design: Many curricula simply transitioned online without considering how to engage students effectively.
  3. Early Career Pathways: Students should be encouraged to pursue their passions earlier, creating pathways that align with their interests.
  4. Individualized Learning Focus: A shift towards mastery-based education will better accommodate diverse learning styles.
  5. Asynchronous Learning Opportunities: Allowing students to learn at their own pace can significantly enhance their educational experience.

How can we engage young people in STEM?

Arra: There is significant potential to increase STEM engagement by:

  1. Involving STEM professionals in curriculum development to ensure relevance.
  2. Offering hands-on experiences, such as field trips and career talks.
  3. Sharing resources for supplementary STEM education.

Why is it important to engage girls and women in STEM?

With STEM jobs projected to grow significantly, it’s essential to encourage young women to pursue careers in these fields, challenging existing biases.

What steps can we take to foster female engagement in STEM?

  1. Provide early exposure to STEM subjects in classrooms.
  2. Encourage participation in clubs and field trips focused on STEM.
  3. Create internship opportunities for high school girls to gain real-world experience.

What is your stance on STEM versus STEAM education?

At Laurel Springs, we advocate for a balanced approach that encourages students to explore all fields, allowing them to pursue their passions while providing the tools necessary for academic exploration.

If you could change the US education system, what five changes would you implement?

  1. Promote mastery-based learning approaches.
  2. Offer more online options for students and parents.
  3. Allow students time for extracurricular activities.
  4. Provide hands-on learning opportunities tailored to students' interests.
  5. Regularly expose students to diverse role models through interactive sessions.

What is your favorite life lesson quote?

Arra: "Smart work plus desire equals success." This mantra has guided me through challenges while keeping me focused.

Who would you like to have breakfast with?

Arra: Elon Musk. His ability to challenge norms and inspire innovation is truly remarkable.
