# Identifying Authentic Google Reviews: A Guide for Business Owners
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Google Reviews
As a small business owner, you surely recognize the significance of online reviews, particularly those found on Google. My own experience as the proprietor of a one-person resume writing service, Resume Phenom LLC, has shown me the immense impact of these reviews. Over the last decade, I have accumulated 190 reviews, proudly maintaining a flawless 5.0 rating. My gratitude for this accomplishment cannot be overstated.
A majority of my clients mention that their decision to contact me was heavily influenced by my stellar Google reviews. In fact, it’s likely I wouldn’t have sustained my business without the visibility provided by these positive testimonials.
Despite my appreciation for reviews as a business owner, I also value them as a consumer. Whenever I consider patronizing a local business, I scrutinize their reviews. If I encounter multiple negative comments or a rating below 3.5, I tend to steer clear.
When I come across a perfect 5.0 rating, I am generally more inclined to give the business a chance, though it’s not always guaranteed.
Unfortunately, the prevalence of FAKE reviews has become a troubling trend. Some businesses resort to placing ads on platforms like Craigslist, offering $5 (via Zelle or CashApp) to anyone willing to post a positive review on Google without ever having utilized their services. It’s disheartening to witness such practices, especially when individuals are tempted by a quick buck. In today's economy, every dollar counts, even if it’s just $5!
In addition to the dubious reviews from random Craigslist users, there are also suspicious testimonials that appear to come from friends of the business owner. These reviews can sometimes seem authentic, but they often come across as overly contrived and insincere.
Section 1.1: Spotting Genuine vs. Fake Reviews
Identifying legitimate reviews from those that are questionable can be straightforward. Here are two genuine reviews I received for Resume Phenom LLC:
Genuine Reviews
- "What can I say about Brian? He is outstanding! He transformed my resume from being completely ineffective to something incredible. I can't thank him enough!"
- "My experience with Brian was fantastic. Despite his busy schedule, he set a clear timeline for our communication and followed up to ensure everything was on track."
Now, let's consider two reviews that seem less credible. While I’ve changed the names for confidentiality, they illustrate how fake reviews might look:
Suspicious Reviews
- "I recently had my resume revamped by Resume Phenom LLC, and I was thoroughly impressed with the service. I highly recommend them!"
- "I booked Resume Phenom LLC for my resume, and they exceeded my expectations! Amazing work!"
Do you notice the differences? Real reviews often provide specific details about the customer’s experience and frequently mention the individual's name who assisted them. Conversely, the artificial reviews tend to excessively repeat the business name, which can signal an effort to manipulate search engine optimization (SEO).
Section 1.2: The Red Flags of Fake Reviews
Another key aspect to consider when evaluating reviews is the timing of their submission. If a company boasts 100 reviews, were they collected over several months or were they all posted within a few weeks? A sudden influx of reviews followed by an extended silence is a major warning sign.
It's possible that the business owner created multiple accounts to artificially inflate their ratings or persuaded friends, who may not have even used the service, to contribute reviews in a short time frame.
