Exploring Grief Through Art: Luella Bartley's Journey

Chapter 1: The Exhibition Experience
In a recent visit to the Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, I encountered Luella Bartley's poignant exhibition, "Intimate Spaces." Her art offers a raw glimpse into her emotional landscape. As Luella expressed, “A friend remarked that my pieces seem to be attempting to escape the confines of their canvas. This resonates deeply with my internal struggles.”
Grief often compels us to don a façade, a necessary shield to navigate daily life amidst turmoil. For Luella, an artist and fashion designer who tragically lost her son Kip to leukaemia in 2021, this meant translating her sorrow into deeply personal and revealing artworks.
The exhibition featured strikingly contorted and twisted female figures, headless yet life-sized, inviting attendees to confront themes of aging, the human form, and intimacy. Engaging with these works felt like stepping into the depths of another's consciousness.
Luella described her exhibition as a means to expel the darkness she carries. This urgency was palpable in her creations, characterized by Lucian Freud-inspired brushwork and a vivid palette of terracotta shades.
Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, like many smaller art venues in London, can be easily overlooked. During my cycling journey, I passed its entrance multiple times before finally noticing it. The ride along Union Street, reminiscent of London’s Elizabethan past with its narrow, winding paths, paralleled the enchanting experience within the gallery.
Grief is a persistent companion, leaving an indelible mark on those it touches. It manifests unexpectedly, but it is crucial to confront it. With "Intimate Spaces," Luella produced a collection that her late son would have admired—he was, according to her, a remarkable artist. Even my Brompton, tucked away in a corner, seemed to resonate with this sentiment.
