# Walking vs. Running: The Surprising Truth About Weight Loss

Chapter 1: The Shift from Running to Walking
In my pursuit of weight loss, I made the decision in May to substitute my morning routine of running with brisk walking before heading to work. Initially, everything seemed manageable, but I quickly found myself fatigued just ten minutes into my run. My attempts to maintain the routine lasted about a week, during which I struggled to run for more than 15 minutes at a time.
As I pushed through, I began to experience intense knee pain. Despite taking breaks, the discomfort returned with a vengeance each time I resumed running. After discussing my experience with a personal trainer, I learned that running elevates the heart rate to around 150-160 beats per minute, a level at which the body primarily burns protein rather than fat. This could potentially lead to muscle loss over time.
Realizing the need for a change, I decided to abandon running in favor of fast walking in the park. While walking briskly, my heart rate dropped to a more manageable 125-130 beats per minute, which is optimal for fat burning. Not only did I feel invigorated after my 30-minute walks, but I also noticed that the knee pain had dissipated entirely.
To my surprise, I found that I burned approximately 200 calories in 30 minutes of brisk walking, a figure comparable to what I achieved during 15 minutes of running. The key difference was that I was now losing fat instead of muscle mass.
