Transform Your Life: 4 Essential Changes for Better Health

Chapter 1: Introduction to Lifestyle Changes
If you’ve been following my writings, you’re likely aware of my profound journey toward health and healing over the past few years. I frequently discuss trauma and recovery, sharing snippets of my personal experiences. The responses to my articles have been unexpectedly rewarding, as they have fostered meaningful conversations about others' struggles and triumphs. This connection is one of the many reasons I cherish my time on Medium.
This article is inspired by the feedback from my previous pieces, such as “When God Convicted Me About Drinking Dr Pepper” and “4 Lessons I Learned When I Quit the American Dream.” I am excited to share four significant lifestyle changes that have positively impacted my health, finances, time management, and overall quality of life.
Section 1.1: Slowing Down the Pace of Life
I have taken substantial steps to decelerate my lifestyle. This shift was not easy, and I completely understand the challenges involved! I once believed I would always be caught in the relentless cycle of hustle and survival. However, due to serious health issues, I was compelled to slow my pace. Initially, I harbored resentment about this necessity, but I now feel immense gratitude.
By reducing my pace, I’ve alleviated stress and fatigue, which has led to improvements in my overall health. I now prioritize rest, which is essential for both mind and body. Additionally, I have more time to nurture meaningful relationships and engage in activities that genuinely matter to me. Instead of feeling overwhelmed when I glance at my calendar, I approach each day with a sense of abundance.
When life presents challenges and stressors beyond my control, I am now equipped to handle them with a healthier mindset, resulting in greater resilience.
Section 1.2: Reflecting and Resetting
How did I achieve this transformation? I took a step back to evaluate my life. I scrutinized how many hours I dedicated to work, driving, and fulfilling obligations for others. I recognized that I was working excessively while neglecting time for myself and my loved ones, leaving me depleted and unable to give more than what was necessary for work.
Thus, I decided to hit the reset button. I began to “close open tabs” in my life, tackling one task at a time. Gradually, I established new boundaries, developed healthier habits, and embraced a lifestyle more aligned with my aspirations and prayers. My husband and I now engage in far fewer activities than before, and we genuinely enjoy this newfound freedom.
Chapter 2: Prioritizing Connection
We never skip date night.
In the past, my husband and I often overlooked date nights due to our hectic schedules. More often than not, we resorted to “lazy” evenings at home, which, while understandable, deprived us of genuine connection. Despite spending time together, we lacked quality interactions.
Today, we prioritize our weekly date night and have set clear boundaries to protect it. At least one date night a week is mandatory, and we ensure that it occurs outside our home. We set aside our phones and avoid discussing potentially contentious topics, reserving those discussions for another time. Instead, we focus on activities that foster connection. If anything threatens our quality time, we’re willing to adjust our schedule accordingly.
As a result, our bond has strengthened, our marriage is healthier, and we have become healthier individuals.
Section 2.1: Aligning with Natural Rhythms
I eat and exercise in harmony with my natural female cycle.
This may not apply to everyone, but I have observed significant improvements in my health by making this adjustment. After my sister recommended the book “Woman Code,” I was intrigued. It outlines the four phases of the female cycle and how to tailor your lifestyle to meet your body’s needs during these phases.
Delving into this topic has been enlightening, and I've gathered a wealth of information on cycle syncing, which could warrant a separate discussion. Following the principles outlined in “Woman Code” has made a notable difference in my overall health.
Section 2.2: Embracing Home Cooking
We prepare most of our meals at home.
I understand that cooking at home can be daunting for many, and it may seem like an additional burden. However, I encourage you to view it as an opportunity to simplify your life. Cooking at home not only saves money but also allows you to control your ingredients. As someone who is lactose intolerant, I’ve found dining out often leads to unintentional dairy consumption, which can be quite challenging.
Eating out often compromises health goals and can lead to uncomfortable situations regarding food sensitivities. Cooking at home restores that control. We are mindful of our food choices, where we shop, and what we prepare, which allows us to enjoy meals with less guilt when dining out or visiting friends.
Give yourself grace!
I recognize that implementing these four lifestyle changes requires time, effort, and determination. Mistakes will happen, and you may find yourself facing obstacles before discovering what works best for you. That’s completely normal! Small adjustments can accumulate over time, leading to significant transformations.
