Learning Self-Care and Boundaries: Embracing a New Language

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Journey of Self-Care

For those who were raised without the tools to prioritize self-care, establish boundaries, or practice self-love, the journey can feel similar to acquiring a foreign language. Initially, it may seem daunting as you try to grasp the concepts involved. However, with time and practice, you'll begin to recognize what healthy boundaries look like and how to incorporate self-care into your life. Eventually, you'll find yourself adept at nurturing these habits independently.

In my experience as a pre-kindergarten teacher, I encountered many children who spoke a language other than English at home. The early days of school were often chaotic, akin to trying to herd cats, with each child moving in their own direction. I needed to guide them to sit together for instruction while reassuring them that their parents would return. Remarkably, after a couple of weeks of consistent teaching, they began to follow my directions effortlessly.

Individuals who struggle with self-care often come from backgrounds marked by dysfunction, such as having a parent with addiction, mental illness, or a history of neglect. These experiences prevent them from learning the vital language of self-worth.

If this resonates with you, you may find that your relationships—whether with coworkers, friends, or family—are fraught with difficulties. You may have often been told that there’s something wrong with you, hearing phrases like, "You're too sensitive!" or "Why do you stay with that person?" This can lead to a cycle of self-blame and confusion, as you wonder why things seem to go well for others but not for you.

Learning the Language of Self-Worth

Just like my pre-kindergarten students who gradually acquired English, you will start by recognizing that there is much you don't know about self-worth, self-care, and boundaries. Often, this awareness arises from painful experiences and heartbreaks that force you to confront your limitations. You may notice that others navigate life with greater ease, prompting you to seek answers.

The next step involves understanding what self-care truly means. It extends beyond occasional indulgences like a manicure or a favorite meal, though these can be part of it. You'll need to learn what healthy boundaries look like and how to prioritize your emotional, mental, and physical well-being. You may find inspiration in public figures, friends, or celebrities who embody these principles and seek out resources like books, podcasts, or online programs.

With time, you’ll practice these newfound skills. Mistakes are part of the learning process; you might skip a workout or set an ineffective boundary. Remember, learning is gradual. Just as my students didn’t master English overnight, you too will develop your self-care skills step by step.

One day, you’ll realize that you feel happier, more confident, and fulfilled, having effectively learned the language of self-worth. While you may face setbacks—like a job change or a challenging relationship—it's essential to recognize that these experiences are part of your journey. Just as my students encountered new vocabulary, you will discover new strategies to navigate life.

Allow yourself to take incremental steps. Forgive your missteps and appreciate how far you've come. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

By the end of the school year, many of my students had become so proficient in English that it was hard to remember their initial struggles. They returned to help younger siblings on their first day, guiding them through the classroom and sharing their experiences.

Those who once faced challenges will eventually model the new language of self-care and healthy boundaries for their families and communities, just as you will inspire others with your newfound skills.
