Revolutionary Voice Isolation in Final Cut Pro: A Must-See Update

Chapter 1: Frustrations with Final Cut Pro
Recently, I've found myself growing increasingly frustrated with Final Cut Pro. A persistent issue I’ve faced is unexpected crashes. While this may be linked to my frequently reused library, I lack the time to start from scratch. Nevertheless, I've learned to anticipate when the program will fail.
If you’re hoping to export your latest video right after rendering, you might want to prepare for a crash. Trying to copy and paste audio settings from a template project? You’ll likely need to hit that Force Quit option.
My relationship with Final Cut Pro is a complicated one; I have an equal mix of love and frustration for it. It reminds me of that friend who always manages to embarrass himself but still manages to support you when you least expect it. This week, after the 10.6.2 update, I experienced a pleasant surprise.
Section 1.1: The Exciting Update
What is voice isolation in Final Cut Pro? The 10.6.2 update is significant for Mac Studio users as it offers full optimization for the M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips.
However, that’s not what has me thrilled. While the ability to detect reused clips and various bug fixes are beneficial, the standout feature for me is voice isolation—a true game-changer.
According to Apple, this new feature utilizes machine learning to "enhance speech clarity by managing background noise levels" (note that you’ll need Monterey 12.3 or later for it to function). Ideally, it results in much clearer voice tracks, particularly in noisy settings.
This isn’t a novel concept; tools like iZotope RX have offered similar capabilities for years. The unique aspect of voice isolation is its integration within Final Cut Pro, allowing for real-time processing as you edit.
Section 1.2: The Impact of Voice Isolation
The results are remarkable. Here’s an unprocessed video for comparison alongside one that has undergone voice isolation. It’s advisable to use headphones for a complete experience. The second video is devoid of background noise, and the voice track is significantly clearer. I still have adjustments to make, but we're heading in a fantastic direction.
The voice isolation feature has resolved two major issues for me: room reverberation and background noise. Tackling room echo is complicated without software assistance. I had recently concluded that investing in deadening the room wasn’t worthwhile, given the cost and effort involved.
Background noise has proven to be an even greater challenge. When I first viewed my studio space last year, I was assured it was quiet. "You might hear a few passing cars during rush hour," the rental agent said. Little did I know that my studio was essentially next to a Formula One track, leading to an incredibly noisy filming environment.
This constant distraction has negatively impacted my confidence in front of the camera. Although editing masks some of these challenges, filming with such noise is far from enjoyable.
The good news? Voice isolation effectively eliminates the road noise from my finished products, allowing me to focus on my performance while filming—what a relief!
Chapter 2: The Joy of Simple Yet Powerful Features
I genuinely appreciate features like voice isolation. They are often simple adjustments, but their effect on my workflow and final product can be enormous.
There are countless examples where software developers have created features that simplify my tasks. For instance, in Ulysses, pasting a URL onto highlighted text instantly creates a markdown hyperlink. In Fantastical, I can swiftly add new calendar entries using predictive input.
Similarly, when it’s time to write, I just activate a pre-set focus session in Brain.fm, and for Medium articles, I can paste in-line content and let Medium handle the formatting.
Despite the complexity behind voice isolation, its implementation is refreshingly straightforward, delivering outstanding results. This feature has saved me considerable time and stress—thank you, Apple.
Section 2.1: How to Use Voice Isolation
Voice isolation is seamlessly integrated into the audio controls in Final Cut Pro 10.6.2. To use it, simply select the audio segment you wish to enhance (either in the timeline or the library), and navigate to the audio inspector located on the right side of your screen.
There, you’ll find a new checkbox for Voice Isolation beneath Equalization. Just tick it, and the effect will apply to the selected audio. You’ll also see an Amount slider, which is set to 50% by default.
Adjusting the slider higher increases the intensity of the voice isolation effect. However, I've noticed that pushing it past 60% can yield an artificial sound. My assumption is that Apple uses an audio gate to suppress background noise during silent moments. Thanks to machine learning, it can also reduce unwanted noise during vocal performances—a truly remarkable feature.
While I continue to refine my use of voice isolation, I've found that setting it around 40% works best for my voice recordings. It's also important to note that this feature can slightly dull the higher frequencies, so I often add a bit of EQ to brighten the sound, which is a minor adjustment.
You may experience some unusual playback behavior during editing, such as sporadic volume dips. Though this isn't particularly distracting and doesn't affect the final cut, it might be better to apply the effect during your final polish.
