Empathy serves as a biological imperative for our species' survival. Without it, infants would struggle to thrive, as nurturing and care would be absent. This capacity fosters social bonds, friendships, and love. Therefore, while empathy is essential in our lives, its presence seems diminished in contemporary American society.

The complexity of empathy makes it a challenging emotion to define. Traditionally viewed as a singular experience, empathy now encompasses two distinct forms: positive and negative empathy. I consider myself empathetic, but I have faced challenges such as betrayal and manipulation due to my sensitivity. At times, this empathy feels burdensome, causing me to question my trust in others. I know I'm not alone in this struggle.

Ordinary individuals display a disregard for others by refusing to wear masks or socially distance, and a recent Gallup poll indicates that about one-third of the population does not recognize existing issues with race relations. This suggests a broader inability to understand others’ perspectives.

Ultimately, collaboration is essential for progress. The mindset of survival of the fittest has exacerbated our disconnect, and it’s imperative to remember that everyone faces unseen challenges and regrets. Why should we inflict our pain on each other?

Section 2.1: Taking Action to Foster Empathy

Real change begins with individual effort. To cultivate empathy on a larger scale, we must first work on ourselves. Fortunately, empathy can be developed and refined like any skill.

Research indicates that reading can enhance empathy. It immerses you in another person's experiences, allowing you to empathize with their feelings.

Engage your curiosity. Explore what empathy means to those around you, and how they perceive it. This not only strengthens your relationships but also informs your interactions with others.

Feigning concern when you don’t feel it isn’t a solution. It’s natural to be frustrated by current events, but taking it out on each other only exacerbates the situation. Hate only breeds more hate; haven’t we seen enough of that in recent years?

We have the potential to be better than our current behavior suggests. Instead of assigning blame, we should focus on finding solutions. It will require collective effort to foster change.

To achieve meaningful transformation, we must collaborate—this involves treating others with humanity, embracing diverse perspectives, and understanding that together, we can accomplish far more than we can alone.
