Letting Go: How to Alleviate Anxiety by Surrendering Control

Written on

Chapter 1: The Burden of Control

The struggle with anxiety often stems from an overwhelming need to control every aspect of our lives. To find freedom, sometimes we must learn to let go.

This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.

Section 1.1: My Journey with Control

I can speak from experience. I used to be excessively controlling, always having not just a Plan B, but also Plans C and D for every situation. Eventually, I came to understand that letting go of control was essential for reducing my anxiety.

For as long as I can remember, this controlling nature went hand-in-hand with my tendency to worry. I would fret over potential mishaps, running countless scenarios in my mind and devising responses for each one.

For many years, I failed to recognize that unexpected events could completely derail my meticulously constructed plans.

For instance, I might plan a meal that requires tomatoes, so I’d ensure to purchase them. I would determine the nearest store, plan my route, and even map out the quickest way to get to the tomatoes once inside. Yet, an unforeseen event—like a friend inviting me out for dinner—could render all that planning irrelevant and waste my time.

Overcoming the need for control

Section 1.2: The Awakening

I cannot recall a single moment that sparked my realization, but gradually, I understood that I could not foresee the future or account for every possibility. My attempts at control only served to heighten my anxiety and lead to disappointment.

Changing such ingrained habits is a challenging process. There are still moments when I revert to my old ways. I must remain vigilant, continually reminding myself that no matter how carefully I plan, there’s always a chance my plans may be upended by unforeseen circumstances. The key to achieving inner peace is to embrace uncertainty and adapt when necessary.
