Exploring My January Reads: A Journey Through 10 Books

Written on

Chapter 1: Setting the Reading Challenge

In 2024, I made a commitment to dive into at least 100 books, which translates to about 8 to 9 titles each month. Most of my reading is done through audio, as I am a dedicated Audible member. I often have a book playing in the background throughout my day when I'm not at work. My primary interests lie in self-development and finance, but I'm also carving out time for some enjoyable fiction. With my 30th birthday approaching in May, I aim to revisit the Harry Potter series before my summer trip to Disney. Additionally, I've received numerous recommendations for the "Court of Thorns and Roses" series, which I hope to explore soon. So many books await, yet time feels limited.

Quick Thoughts on My January Reads

  1. Good Morning, Monster by Catherine Gildner

Format: Audio, Genre: Memoir, Psychology/Mental Health, Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

"True insights happen only when the therapist gets out of the way."

This book was so impactful that it won Best Overall in my 2023 Book Awards even before I finished it. It's a powerful blend of honesty, humor, and reflection.

  2. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb

Format: Kindle, Genre: Memoir, Psychology, Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

"It takes a while to hear a person's story and for that person to tell it, and like most stories — including mine — it bounces all over the place before you know what the plot really is."

This memoir beautifully illustrates the necessity of therapy, shedding light on the stigmas surrounding mental health and what truly makes life meaningful.

  3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling

    Format: Audio, Genre: Fiction/Fantasy, Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

"But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them."

This timeless classic on friendship and magic reignited my passion for writing, reminding me of my childhood love for the series.

  4. The Noel Letters by Richard Paul Evans

    Format: Kindle, Genre: Fiction/Holiday, Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️

"Remember this: Christmas is the story of a Father reaching out to His children. Nothing more. Nothing less."

A heartwarming holiday read that beautifully captures the essence of Christmas through familial reconciliation.

  5. You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jenn Sincero

    Format: Audio, Genre: Self-help/Finance/Motivational, Rating: 3/5 ⭐️

"If you've made a backup plan, you haven't made a decision."

While enjoyable, this book felt a bit superficial compared to other personal finance literature, focusing more on mindset than practical wealth-building.

  6. The Housemaid's Secret by Frieda McFadden

Format: Audible, Genre: Fiction/Psychological Thriller, Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

"Although isn't there another side to everyone?"

As a winner of the Goodreads Best Mystery & Thriller 2023, McFadden's writing style captivates me, and I eagerly await the next installment in this series.

  7. The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel

    Format: Audio, Genre: Self-help/Finance, Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

"Controlling your time is the highest dividend money pays."

This book serves as a great introduction to personal finance, examining our complex relationships with money shaped by our upbringing.

  8. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

    Format: Audio, Genre: Fiction/Fantasy, Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

"Of all the trees we could've hit, we had to get one that hits back." — Ron

Though it ranks as my least favorite in the series, it remains an exceptional read.

  9. We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rogers

    Format: Audio, Genre: Self-help/Finance/Motivational, Rating: 2.75/5 ⭐️

"Imposter syndrome doesn't just make you feel shitty about yourself, it also keeps you broke."

While Rogers is entertaining, I found the practical advice lacking, focusing more on societal issues affecting women and minorities.

  10. Heart of the Matter: What 100 Years of Living Has Taught Me by Russell M. Nelson

    Format: Kindle, Genre: Religion/Spirituality/LDS/Memoir, Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

"We might ask ourselves, 'How firm is my spiritual foundation?' What reinforcements to my testimony are needed to withstand the spiritual earthquakes in my life?"

At 100 years old, President Nelson shares profound wisdom from his life experiences, offering foundational insights for spiritual growth.
