The Pixel 7a comes with a price tag of £449, which is £50 higher than its predecessor. However, this price point offers a substantial device on paper.

Equipped with the latest Google Tensor G2 chip, 8GB of RAM, a 6.1-inch display, and a 64MP primary camera system, the 7a is a noteworthy contender. Although it offers only one storage option—128GB—there are significant enhancements, including a smoother 90Hz refresh rate, a more refined design, and the addition of wireless charging.

When placed next to the Pixel 6a, the Pixel 7a appears to be an attractive upgrade. However, how do these specifications translate into real-world use?

Design and Display

The Pixel 7a boasts a design that feels much more premium than its price suggests. While I appreciated the understated aesthetics of the Pixel 6a, it lacked a special touch. In contrast, the Pixel 7a is visually appealing and provides immediate satisfaction upon unboxing.

The only downside is that the rear plastic back is prone to collecting dust, smudges, and fingerprints—an unfortunate trait for a tech reviewer. Fortunately, the camera housing resists scratches better than that of the Pixel 7 Pro.

The display is impressive too. Those disappointed with previous ‘a’ series models lacking high refresh rates will now be pleased with the 90Hz panel, which is sharp and bright. Additionally, it features both a fingerprint reader and face unlock for added convenience.

Performance and Battery Life

I typically don’t engage in extensive benchmarking or mobile gaming; my evaluation of the Pixel 7a focuses on everyday tasks.

For regular use, which is likely how most users will experience this device, it performs exceptionally well. The combination of the fast Tensor G2 chip and the clean version of Android makes the Pixel 7a a standout performer.

The Pixel 7a continues the tradition of delivering flagship-level performance at a fraction of the cost. It operates smoothly without lag or overheating, although its battery life isn't quite at flagship levels. While it can last over a day, it may require charging sooner than the Pixel 7 or 7 Pro. However, light users might stretch it close to two days, and the inclusion of wireless charging is a welcome feature, albeit slow.

Camera Quality

I’m an avid fan of Pixel cameras. The way these devices process images resonates with me; their photos are characterized by contrast and depth.

I believe Pixels are developing a unique photographic identity. The Pixel 7a's 64MP camera system captures stunning images, and while photography is subjective, I find its quality to be among the best.

The video capabilities, while not as strong as the iPhone, offer good quality for the price. The 4K footage presents decent dynamic range, making it suitable for casual use. However, the stabilization might feel overly robotic for some users.

Pixel 7a vs Pixel 6a

For those considering the Pixel 6a, the good news is that it may now be available at a bargain, thanks to the arrival of its successor.

That said, several key differences exist between the two models. The 7a features Google's latest Tensor chip, additional RAM, wireless charging, face unlock, and an enhanced camera system.

In my view, the £50 increase is justified given the advancements offered by the Pixel 7a. However, if you seek a fantastic low-cost Android experience without the frills, the Pixel 6a remains a strong contender.

Pixel 7a vs Pixel 7

The increased price of the Pixel 7a brings it surprisingly close to the mid-range Pixel 7, with only a £150 gap separating the two.

Both models share the same chip, RAM, and a 90Hz display, but there are notable distinctions. The Pixel 7 offers two storage options—128GB and 256GB—while the 7a is limited to the former. The Pixel 7 also has a slightly larger display (6.3 inches vs. 6.1 inches) and better water resistance.

While both devices support wireless charging, the Pixel 7 has faster charging capabilities. The biggest difference lies in their camera systems; the Pixel 7a has a larger sensor, but the Pixel 7's setup allows for better light capture due to its larger pixels. In practical terms, the differences are minimal unless you conduct side-by-side comparisons.

Choosing between the Pixel 7a and Pixel 7 is straightforward: opt for the Pixel 7 if you need more storage or prefer a slightly more premium feel and enhanced features. If those aspects aren’t crucial, the Pixel 7a is a solid choice.
