Finding Your Voice: A Journey to Authentic Writing on Medium

Chapter 1: Embracing Your Identity as a Writer

So, it turns out that I am a writer.

Well, to clarify... I am a Writer!

At least, that's what I keep telling myself. I've embraced this identity, and now all that's left for me is to start writing.

Having recently joined Medium, I find myself on a journey of rediscovering writing. While storytelling has always been my profession, I'm now exploring writing in a fresh and exciting way.

Writing today is a fascinating landscape; it seems everyone is sharing their thoughts online. Reflecting on my younger days, when the Internet was just beginning to flourish, I remember stumbling upon blogs. Back then, I couldn’t engage with them. As a child, my life felt too chaotic to document, so I focused on imaginative, fantasy-driven narratives instead.

Writing about my own experiences didn’t appeal to me, even as I transitioned into adulthood. However, looking back now, I've realized I had a misconception about blogging. It doesn't have to be a personal diary.

I used to wonder, “How could someone write about their day and then share it online? Who would want to read about someone else’s daily experiences?” That was my limited view of blogging.

As I enter this new chapter in my life—approaching 33 and preparing to welcome my first child—I find myself with a renewed desire to express myself creatively. It’s amusing, being a performer, to seek another avenue for expression. Perhaps I am a bit dramatic?

Writing serves not only as a means of expression but also as a therapeutic outlet. With so much happening around me and within my own thoughts and feelings, writing helps me process and communicate. The beauty of being part of a community of writers is that we share this journey together.

How can you stand out as a writer in this crowded space?

Since joining Medium, I’ve encountered countless articles on topics like how to monetize writing, how to get noticed, and how to find your niche. I’ve read numerous pieces, and while I appreciate those who seek to help others succeed, the sheer volume can be overwhelming.

Most of us are drawn to these articles because, naturally, we want to earn money doing something we love. But I quickly realized how damaging this mindset can be.

When I first came to Medium, my goal was simply to find a space to write freely. However, I soon noticed how easily one can become fixated on making money from writing, which can narrow our perspective and inhibit creativity.

Imagine wanting to become a doctor. It involves years of rigorous study and immense responsibility, and if the sole motivation was monetary, the entire journey would be significantly more challenging and uninspiring.

Passion is the driving force that fuels success. Whether you love writing or aspire to be a doctor, pursue it for the love of it. If your focus is solely on the outcome, the path will be fraught with difficulties.

I share this as someone who has been writing for only a few weeks, but also as someone who has built a career driven by passion, despite its lack of financial rewards.

This isn’t to undermine those who write for a living; they deserve recognition for their achievements. My message is for those who wish to write but feel overwhelmed by the visibility and success of others.

Don’t let this discourage you. In my brief time writing, I’ve realized I wish I had started much earlier. I procrastinated, waiting for the perfect topic or platform. What I’ve learned is that taking the first step is essential.

I don’t claim to be the next great writer, nor do I expect to be. I write because I want to, because it’s fulfilling. It allows me to express my thoughts and experiences in ways I otherwise wouldn’t. I encourage anyone with a desire to write to simply begin. If you’re hesitant to share, that’s okay; just write!

Don’t allow the success of others to intimidate you. Your journey starts now!

Chapter 2: Overcoming Self-Doubt and Embracing Growth

In the video "How to become a Medium Top Writer in 3 Steps," you’ll discover actionable strategies to enhance your writing and gain visibility on Medium.

The second video, "How to Get Started Writing on Medium in 2024 (and Earning Money)," provides insights into launching your writing journey on the platform while exploring monetization options.

As I continue to navigate my writing journey, I have a multitude of ideas swirling in my mind. Yet, I still grapple with self-doubt about the quality of my writing or whether I should be producing articles daily.

What I know for certain is that I want to write. There are subjects I’m passionate about, and as I refine my style and methods, I will persist in writing about whatever inspires me. How else will I improve if I merely think about writing?

One of my favorite quotes resonates deeply with me: “Don’t be discouraged by failure. It can be a positive experience. Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, as each discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true.” — John Keats

Stay blessed.
