Exploring the Terrifying Implications of Lunar Resource Exploitation

Written on

Chapter 1: A New Chapter in Lunar Exploration

Earlier today, Business Insider published an unsettling article regarding the recent American lunar landing: NASA has successfully returned to the moon, marking the first commercial lunar landing in history. The IM-1 mission touched down on the moon's surface just yesterday. Notably, this unmanned vehicle represents the first successful American lunar landing in over half a century.

What truly disturbs me about this news isn’t the fact that we (some might argue "allegedly") landed on the moon back in 1972, or the prolonged absence of U.S. missions since then. One might think we would have refined the process by now—perhaps even established fast-food outlets or schools up there? It’s puzzling that we successfully visited the moon more than 50 years ago yet have struggled to replicate that achievement despite technological advancements. But I digress.

The alarming part lies in this statement from the article:

"The past five years have seen a string of unsuccessful moon landings by Russia, India, Japan, an Israeli nonprofit, a Japanese company, and, just last month, NASA's partner Astrobotic. There is a frenzied rush to establish a presence on the moon amid a new race for lunar territory and resources."

Consider that last line again—“There is a frenzied rush to establish a presence on the moon amid a new race for lunar territory and resources.” Does anyone else find this motivation for lunar exploration deeply unsettling and frightening?

Are we, as a species, only focused on pursuing lunar research to see how we can exploit the moon's resources? Haven't we learned enough from our treatment of this beautiful planet? What about advancing our scientific understanding? What about fostering human unity rather than competing for resource exploitation?

If we struggle to manage this on Earth, what hope do we have of mastering it elsewhere?

We must strive for better, humanity. We must do better.

A stark view of the lunar landscape reflecting our ambitions.
