Chapter 1: The Allure of Apple Products
My experience with Apple products has been transformative, and I'm not solely referring to their financial cost.
Recently, I unpacked my Apple TV 4K and the HomePod Mini, adding to my collection that already includes an iPhone and various other Apple devices. My intention is to share why I'm so enamored with Apple's offerings and ecosystem, albeit with a unique perspective.
After setting up the Apple TV by connecting it to my television, the magic began. Utilizing my iPhone for setup, I had everything operational and connected to WiFi in mere minutes. But the surprises didn't end there. I was able to enhance the color calibration of my older television using the Apple TV via my iPhone. The improvement was astonishing—my old TV felt rejuvenated, akin to a state-of-the-art model.
Anticipation grew as it was time to configure the HomePod Mini as well. The setup process was incredibly smooth; simply directing my iPhone's camera at the device completed the task in seconds. My home entertainment system was ready for action.
The Ultimate Test
I opted for a classic: the recently restored The Godfather. This selection posed a true challenge for my compact HomePod Mini and the Apple TV 4K. The film's soundtrack, composed by Nino Rota, is timeless, resonating deeply with its audience. The audio effects were rich and immersive, allowing me to experience the film in a profoundly engaging manner.
The Apple TV 4K excelled in delivering a luxurious viewing experience. The restored visuals were vibrant and detailed, reminiscent of the film's original release 50 years ago. It was a cinematic treat.
I found myself captivated as my modest living room transformed into a sophisticated entertainment hub—all without stretching my budget.
Transitioning to Other Uses
After the movie, I had a late-night Zoom call to attend. Despite the late hour here, switching from the Apple TV to my iPad was effortless, with the HomePod Mini seamlessly transitioning its audio output with just a single touch.
Fast forward a few weeks, and my family has integrated the HomePod into our daily lives. We often converse with it in both English and Japanese, and switching audio sources has become second nature.
Understanding Apple's Value
My recent experiences prompted me to contemplate the enduring value of Apple products. Why do we often overlook their high prices? What fuels our unwavering customer loyalty? What constitutes value in this context?
Reflecting on the thoughts of Japanese educator Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871–1944), who defined value in terms of beauty, goodness, and gain, I found clarity. Makiguchi's concept of Value-Creating Pedagogy emphasizes the creation of value both in and through education.
In essence, mere facts lack inherent value. Real value emerges only when these three elements coexist in our endeavors.
First: Beauty
To create value, a product must possess beauty—not just in its appearance but on a deeper emotional level. The design, user experience, and functionality must evoke positive feelings in users to be deemed valuable.
Second: Goodness
According to Makiguchi, goodness equates to high quality. This encompasses the physical attributes of the product and the overall user experience, which should be seamless and intuitive. It’s essential that products perform as promised and often exceed expectations.
Third: Gain
Finally, value must translate into tangible benefits for users. While monetary savings are one aspect, true value encompasses more profound outcomes—users should feel respected and appreciated. Neuroscience suggests that these softer elements of value creation yield longer-lasting effects.
Apple's Value Beyond Monetary Worth
Apple has cultivated value on multiple profound levels. Its products and services not only demonstrate innovation but also provide significant value to customers through the principles outlined by Makiguchi. This is why we maintain such loyalty to the brand.
Ultimately, the value of Apple lies not in its pricing but in the enriching experiences we gain as users.
