Embracing Imperfection: The Path to Authenticity in Business

Written on

Chapter 1: The Uniqueness of Being Real

"Don't shy away from what sets you apart." Those words resonated deeply with me, ultimately guiding my transformation in marketing. They became my guiding principle as I revamped my approach.

Initially, I was paralyzed by the thought of appearing in online videos. The idea of showcasing my aging face, complete with a double chin, sent my heart racing. I was consumed by self-doubt. What if viewers laughed? What if I became a target for ridicule? The anxiety felt overwhelming.

For years, I kept my age under wraps until meeting clients face-to-face. I had often heard phrases like "You are unique" or "You're one of a kind," but they never truly resonated. However, "Don't shy away from what makes you different" struck a chord. Perhaps I had finally reached a point where I was less concerned about others' opinions, prompting me to take the plunge.

What should my content focus on? I had numerous ideas related to real estate, but where to begin? Should I clarify real estate terminology, or highlight available properties? As a newcomer to online video, I worried that other agents had already covered these topics. Why would anyone be interested in my take? I felt like a chef surrounded by ingredients but without a clear recipe.

I positioned myself in front of the camera, practiced my best smile (the one that disguises my double chin), and memorized my lines until they became second nature. But when I hit record, I froze. My mind went blank as impostor syndrome, anxiety, and stage fright overwhelmed me.

After typing out a script for guidance, I attempted again. My mouth felt parched, but eventually, I thought I had crafted the perfect video. However, upon playback, it was evident that I was simply reading, sounding overly formal and somewhat robotic.

As the day progressed, I recorded take after take, resulting in endless bloopers. I began to chuckle at my own mishaps—laughter that made my belly jiggle and my double chin shake. I even saved the funniest moments for a blooper reel at the end of the year.

Gradually, I recognized that my personality is what truly sets me apart. This is my "unique charm." If I aim to attract clients who resonate with me, I must present my true self and acknowledge my imperfections. And if some people didn't appreciate that, they could choose not to work with me.

"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else." — Margaret Mead.

To my surprise, when I finally shared the video, it became a success. Viewers appreciated the authenticity, praising the refreshing contrast to overly polished personas. I had become the anti-Instagram model, and it worked to my advantage.

Now, I wholeheartedly embrace my quirks. It’s a liberating experience.

So, my advice to you is this: Don’t shy away from what makes you different, regardless of how long it takes.

The first video titled "The Power of Authenticity: Mike Robbins at TEDxGreenbrookSchool" emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself, shedding the fear of judgment, and embracing individuality in a world that often pushes for conformity.

Chapter 2: The Courage to Be Yourself

In the video "The Power of Being Real: Aliza Licht at TEDxTimesSquare," the speaker discusses the significance of authenticity in personal branding, encouraging individuals to showcase their real selves and connect deeply with their audience.
