Crafting a Dystopian Novel: Insights from My Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: Writing Progress and Personal Growth
Currently, I've penned around 75,000 words for my dystopian novel, with a goal of reaching at least 100,000. The journey so far has been enlightening, shedding light on both my writing process and personal growth. Here are three key takeaways I've encountered thus far:
Section 1.1: Commonly Overused Words
As I dove into writing, I realized I have a tendency to overuse certain words. This awareness has prompted me to seek out alternatives, though I still find myself leaning on familiar terms. Here are a few examples of words that have popped up repeatedly in my writing:
- Just: 199 occurrences
- Definitely: 30 occurrences
- Quiet(ly): 30 occurrences
- Quick(ly): 50 occurrences
- Little: 91 occurrences
- Incredibly: 34 occurrences
I’m actively working on diversifying my vocabulary—time to consult the thesaurus!
Section 1.2: The Challenge of Descriptions
While I find joy in crafting action sequences, writing descriptions—especially of characters—proves to be a struggle. When I observe someone, I often find it difficult to articulate what I see. For instance, I can mention basic features, but detailed observations elude me. I often joke that I wouldn't fare well describing someone to a police sketch artist.
I admire how other authors excel in this area, and I take note of their techniques to enhance my own descriptive skills.
Subsection 1.2.1: Keeping Track of Characters
Managing the main characters is relatively straightforward, but minor characters present a challenge. I find myself forgetting details like their occupations or descriptions. I've realized too late that maintaining a dedicated document for this information would have been beneficial. Thankfully, the search function in Google Docs helps me locate details with more ease. Once I finish the first draft, I plan to create a 'Character Bible' that will include each character's description, preferences, and motivations to keep everything organized.
I look forward to further discoveries about myself and the craft of writing in the months ahead. I’m sure numerous lessons still await me!
Here’s a glimpse at the opening chapter of my book:
"Lucas? Can you hear me, Lucas?"
My mind feels hazy as I hear a gentle voice nearby. I slowly open my eyes, attempting to piece together my surroundings. When my vision clears, I recognize the familiar, elderly face of Dr. Noakes. His deep-set wrinkles and slightly crooked nose offer me a sense of comfort in my confusion. I’ve known him for three years, having met him after our previous family doctor was incarcerated.
My father, a high-ranking Senator in the Imperium, had a strong reaction to Dr. Terry’s actions, which led to his downfall. Dr. Noakes has managed to avoid my father's wrath thus far, remaining our family's doctor longer than any before him. Though professional, there’s a warmth in his gaze reminiscent of Dr. Terry—a quality that could potentially lead to his own challenges.
"Yes, I can hear you," I reply, my voice raspy. I blink several times to clear the remaining fog. One eye feels particularly irritated, almost as if it had been poked with a flame.
"Everything went as planned. Any discomfort should subside within the next two days. Congratulations on acquiring your Blink-183 Captioner." Dr. Noakes grins, revealing his bright white teeth and sparkling blue eyes framed by bushy gray brows.
I slowly nod, memories flooding back. I had come for my Captioner. I blink again to focus on the sterile recovery room, its stark white walls and bright overhead light creating a clinical atmosphere. The faint scent of antiseptic serves as a sharp reminder of the procedure I just underwent.
Dr. Noakes observes me with a blend of professional detachment and genuine concern. "You may experience mild disorientation or headaches, but that's normal. Just remember to rest and hydrate. If anything severe arises, contact me immediately."
I manage a small smile, grateful for his care. "Thanks, Doc. I’ll keep that in mind."
Standing up slowly, I steady myself as the room tilts slightly. Dr. Noakes places a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Take it easy, Lucas. You’ll be fine."
"Thanks, Dr. Noakes," I respond, appreciating his support. As I make my way to the door, each step feels more confident. Stepping out into the busy streets of Lincolnia, the weight of what lies ahead sinks in. I take a deep breath, feeling the cool air fill my lungs. The countdown has begun, and there's no turning back.
In the next four days, every 18-year-old in Elysia will undergo a similar procedure to mine. Then, in ten days, they will line up for the race that will determine their futures: The Gauntlet.
