Better a Happy Clown than a Sad Economist: A Reflection on Dreams

Chapter 1: A Dream Deferred
At the age of 15, I envisioned a future as a journalist. I had a passion for languages and literature, eagerly consumed books, and contributed to the school newspaper. Everything seemed in place for me to enroll in a journalism program at a prominent university, except for one crucial factor—financial resources. The tuition was steep, and the available scholarships were scarce. Consequently, I opted for the translation faculty instead.
Reflecting on my choices, I wish I had at least attempted to pursue journalism. Nonetheless, I have found fulfillment in my educational path. With my degree, I can work as both a translator and a foreign language instructor. In today's world, being a journalist is not the only way to voice one's opinions.
Growing up in an environment where forgoing higher education was viewed as a disaster, I often felt the weight of societal expectations. In this context, possessing a diploma seemed more valuable than actual knowledge or skills. While Ukraine boasts 141 universities, Germany has a staggering 501. It's worth noting that students flock to Germany from around the globe, whereas the influx of foreign students in Ukraine is minimal.
What does the figure 141 signify? It suggests a lack of competition within our universities. As a result, many students can coast through their education without much effort and still secure a place at a university, whether through paid tuition or limited scholarships.
When asked whether we work in our chosen fields, affirmative responses are rare. We belong to a generation of disheartened lawyers and economists, many of whom succumbed to parental pressures. After all, parents are convinced they know what’s best for their children, right?
There are countless stories of individuals who abandoned their dreams: someone aspired to be an actor but ended up studying nuclear physics; another had the potential to be an outstanding veterinarian but instead spent five grueling years immersed in law books; yet another could have excelled as a world-class athlete but now finds themselves confined to an office, laboriously entering data into spreadsheets. The number of such scenarios is staggering, and the sadness is palpable.
Parents, it's crucial to listen to your children and observe their true passions. Recognize and value their accomplishments in art, music, or sports. Avoid imposing your own aspirations onto them, as this journey is about their lives, not yours. Remember, your children are not extensions of you; they are individuals with their own identities. Sometimes, they possess a clearer understanding of their needs and desires than we do.
Section 1.1: The Impact of Societal Expectations
The societal pressure surrounding education often leads to questionable career choices. Many young individuals find themselves in fields that do not align with their true passions, primarily due to parental influence and societal norms.
Subsection 1.1.1: Recognizing Individual Passions
Section 1.2: The Importance of Listening
The need for parents to listen and observe their children's interests cannot be overstated. Encouraging children to pursue their passions can lead to more fulfilling and happier lives.
Chapter 2: A Call for Understanding
In conclusion, fostering a supportive environment where children can explore their interests is vital. By stepping back and allowing them to chart their own paths, we can help cultivate a generation of fulfilled individuals.
