Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Lessons from My First Business Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: A Costly Oversight
When I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey, I made a blunder that still lingers in my memory. This misstep nearly jeopardized both my first venture and my reputation.

Having launched several small enterprises, I realized early on that working for someone else was not for me; I craved independence. At 18, during the era when smartphones were far less advanced, I initiated a photography business. My involvement in various sports and my work for a local newspaper allowed me to connect with numerous individuals in the industry. I attended competitions and events ranging from Taekwondo to dance, which was exhilarating.
However, this journey almost didn't happen due to a foolish mistake that still haunts me: being too frugal.
Section 1.1: The Cost of Being Cheap
As a young entrepreneur, my finances were limited. Although I had saved a few hundred euros from early jobs, purchasing quality photography equipment required significant investment. When it came time to buy printing supplies, I opted for low-cost, generic paper instead of premium options.
During my first competition, I was thrilled with the images I captured and even had potential buyers. However, my first print was a disaster.
"That's unfortunate," I thought, "it happens sometimes."
But the second print was equally disappointing, with dull colors and poor clarity. One customer, who had already handed me cash, whispered to his friend, "Don't buy one; the quality is terrible."
Hearing that stung. In hindsight, it wasn't my photography that was flawed—at least not in terms of composition. The issue was my choice of printing materials; I skimped on a crucial element, which ultimately reflected poorly on my work.
After investing over 1,000 euros in equipment, a mere 20-euro saving on paper cost me sales at my first event and could have jeopardized my business.
Section 1.2: The Importance of Quality
Reputation is built quickly. Upon returning home, I immediately ordered high-quality Epson Premium glossy paper. The results were stellar, and my clients were satisfied, which restored my confidence. Yet, I realized I could have achieved even more if I had sought proper guidance.
I needed a mentor who could have advised me on the importance of quality materials. Having an experienced guide can prevent many pitfalls and expedite the learning curve.
Chapter 2: Embracing Guidance
One critical video to watch is "The #1 Mistake A New Business Owner Makes." It discusses common pitfalls that new entrepreneurs encounter, emphasizing the need for quality in every aspect of a business.
Now that I am older and have launched numerous ventures, I have learned from my mistakes. I stopped being overly frugal. Aiming to save a few euros can lead to significant losses. First impressions matter, so it’s essential to invest wisely.
I've transitioned into a role where I mentor startups, having assisted entrepreneurs and CEOs for over 15 years. The recurring mistakes I observe often stem from two primary issues: being cheap and neglecting to seek guidance at the project's inception.
The absence of proper mentorship often leads to poor decision-making regarding human resources, budgets, and processes, resulting in failed projects and further misjudgments.
Another valuable resource is "7 Common Mistakes That Can Sabotage Your Financial Success," which highlights the pitfalls that can derail financial stability in startups.
If you're considering launching a project, commit fully. Avoid cutting corners that could undermine your confidence or tarnish your initial impression with your product. Invest in both your business and your personal development. Seeking help from those with experience can save you time and give you a competitive edge.
I continue to collaborate with mentors like Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, Tim Denning, Mandy Liu, and Veronica Llorca-Smith to refine my approach and mindset.
